A Dogs Tale Pdf Book Summary

A sentimental story praised for its touching plot and condemnation of scientific experiments on animals, Mark Twain effectively delivers a truly impressive work. First published in Harper’s Magazine in 1903, A Dog’s Tale was later published as a pamphlet for the National Anti-Vivisection Society.

The story focuses on the life of Aileen, an unknown dog who experiences the ups and downs of life while being forcibly exposed to suffering due to a superficial belief in his inferiority among humans.

The story is told from the point of view of Aileen Mavourneen, a self-proclaimed Presbyterian whose mother is a collie and the father of St. Bernard. The story begins with Aileen’s life as a puppy living with her mother until later adopted by a loving family.

Life in her new home seems perfect because she lives in a well-decorated house and there is an open space where she can roam freely and play with other dogs. Finally, the house welcomes the arrival of the owner’s baby and puppy Aileen, which adds to the fun of the house. However, the bad days end when a terrible accident occurs, which requires Aileen to risk her own life to save her owner’s child from injury.

Despite her heroic deed, Aileen was rewarded with the greatest brutality that changed her life forever. The dog story, a compelling piece of literature, effectively depicts the dark and indifferent nature of people compared to the good and faithful character of dogs. The story is guaranteed to tremble one’s heart and arouses many strong emotions through short but even stronger sides.

Twain has successfully created a work that appeals to her audience so that she cannot feel indifferent to the strong message presented in the work. In addition, Twain’s effectiveness in illustrating the inhuman and careless handling of animals is enhanced by allowing the listener to enter the dog’s mind and observe and feel life on the other side of the coin.

And Dog’s Tale, providing a generous service of humor, irony, love, cruelty and uplifting moments, invites people to step back and seriously reflect on their actions and the role that humans and animals have played in society.

Mark Twain in 1907 - source Wikipedia

Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri and later provided the backdrop for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He worked as a student at a printing press and then worked as a letter writer, delivering newspaper articles to his older brother, Orion Clemens.

He later became a river boat pilot on the Mississippi River before moving west to join Orion, Nevada. He described his lack of mining success as ridiculous and turned to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise.

His humorous short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” was published in 1865 based on a story he heard at the Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he spent some time as a miner. The short story attracted international attention and was even translated into French. His wisdom and satire, both in prose and speech, were admired by critics and peers and was a friend of European presidents, artists, industrialists and the royal family.
