At the beginning of the twentieth century, Minnie Maddern Fiske, a New York actress, socialist and animal rights activist, wrote to Mark Twain with a unique request: that Twain write about the evil of bullfighting, which corresponds to his anti-vivisectionist story.

And Horse’s Tale is about the main character about Soldier Boy, Bill Cody’s favorite Buffalo horse, and sometimes tells of a fictitious U.S. border base. Seventh Cavalry. Upon the arrival of the general’s estranged cousin, Buffalo Bill takes him under his wing and eventually borrows his Soldier Boy so they can go on an adventure together.

Twain used the friendship between a woman and a horse as the basis for his latest allegations of barbarism in Spanish bullfighting. Twain’s novel is unique in its complex tone – it combines a comic book story for children and a dismal picture of animal cruelty.

By embracing the themes of transatlantic relations and frontier culture, Twain offers a new perspective on the world of Buffalo Bill Cody from the perspective of one of America’s most popular writers.

The book A Horse’s Tale, first published in Harper’s Monthly in 1906 and as a volume the following year, no longer appears in print, except for anthologies of Twain’s work.

About the Author

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pseudonym Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, businessman, publisher and teacher. His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and his successor The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), often referred to as the “Great American Novel.”

Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri and later provided the backdrop for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He worked as a student at a printing press and then worked as a letter writer, delivering newspaper articles to his older brother, Orion Clemens.

He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise.

His humorous story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner.
