Doctor Dolittle’s Post Office Pdf Book Summary
Doctor Dolittle’s Post Office is the third of Hugh Lofting’s Doctor Dolittle books. Set on the west coast of Africa, the 1923 book follows the episodic format of most of the other books in the series.
At the beginning of the book, Doctor Dolittle helps capture the ship of a slave trader and later organizes the postal service of a small African kingdom, Fantippo, ruled by King Koko. By mobilizing migratory birds to carry people’s mail from one continent to another, Dr. Dolittle effectively anticipates the invention of air mail in the 20th century.
Over the course of the following chapters, he discovers a hidden island populated by prehistoric creatures, is locked up in another African prison, invents animal alphabets, and defeats at least two armies. Each of the animals of the Dolittle family also tells a personal story. The postal program is transformed into a global postal and editorial service for the benefit of animals around the world.
The final segment of the book is the Doctor’s journey to meet Mudface the Turtle, the oldest living creature on Earth, who survived the Great Flood. The vast history of the Great Flood is presented in a subsequent volume of the series, Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake, published posthumously in 1948.
