Description of the Book

At the beginning of the novel, Bathsheba Everdene is a beautiful girl with no fortune. He meets Gabriel Oak, a young farmer, and saves his life one evening.

He asked her to marry him, but she refused because she did not love him. After inheriting his uncle’s prosperous farm, he moved to the town of Weatherbury.

Calamity fell upon Gabriel’s garden, and he lost it; he was forced to give up farming. He gives up looking for work and, during his travels, ends up in Weatherbury. After escaping from a local farm on fire, he asked his mistress if she needed a shepherd.

Thomas Hardy OM (June 2, 1840 – January 11, 1928) was an English writer and poet. A true Victorian in the tradition of George Eliot, Romanism influenced her in her novels and poetry, including the poetry of William Wordsworth.

He was very critical of many things in Victorian society, especially for the decline in the condition of people living in rural areas in Britain, such as those in his hometown of South West England.
