About The Author

Aeschylus (UK, /’i?skIl@s/ US, /’eskIl@s/ Greek: Aiskhulos Aischylos, c. 525/524-c. 456/455 BC) is an ancient Greek tragedydian and is often called the father of tragedy. His work is the foundation of academic knowledge about the genre. Understanding earlier Greek tragedies is largely based upon inferences drawn from his surviving plays. Aristotle claims that he increased the number of actors in the theatre and allowed for conflict between them. Previously, characters interacted with only the chorus.

Seventy-eight of his seventy to ninety plays are believed to have survived. Prometheus Bound is the subject of a long-running debate. Some scholars believe it to be his son Euphorion. Other fragments have been preserved in quotations and many more are still being discovered on Egyptian papyri. These fragments can often provide additional insight into Aeschylus’ work.

His plays were presented as a trio by Aeschylus, who was most likely the first dramatist. His Oresteia is an example of an ancient example. One of his plays, at least one, was influenced in some way by the Persians’ second invasion Greece (480-479 BC).

Aeschylus

The Persians is one of few classical Greek tragedies that deals with current events. It is also the only one. Aeschylus and his Greeks were so impressed by the significance of the war against Persia that his epitaph honors his participation in the Greek victory of Marathon, but does not mention his success as an author.

Aeschylus was born around 525 BCE in Eleusis (a small settlement located 27km northwest of Athens in the fertile valleys west Attica). Scholars believe that Aeschylus’ birth date may have been determined by counting back forty years to his first victory in Great Dionysia.

His family was well-off and wealthy. Euphorion was his father and a member the Eupatridae. This could be a fabrication by the ancients to explain the magnificence of Aeschylus’ plays.

Aeschylus was a young man who worked in a vineyard as a laborer. Then, Pausanias, a 2nd-century CE geographer, claims that the god Dionysus appeared to him while he was asleep and told him to focus on the emerging art of tragedy. He began writing tragedies as soon as he woke up.

His first performance was in 499 BCE when he was 26. His first victory at City Dionysia was in 484 BCE. You can read more about the Author: Aeschylus – Wiki
