The Cossacks Pdf Book Summary by BajrontBooks

The young idealist Dmitry Andrei Olenin left Moscow in the hope of starting a new life in the Caucasus. In stanitse, he is slowly drawn in and despises his previous life. He befriended old Kozak Eroshka, who accompanied him on the hunt and found a good man in him because of his connection to drinking.

The young Cossack Luka then killed a Chechen who tried to cross the river into the village to examine the Cossacks and gain great respect.

Olenin falls in love with the girl Maryanka, who later marries Luka in the story. He tries to stop this emotion and eventually convinces himself that he loves Luke and Maryanka for their simplicity, and decides that happiness only comes to those who always give to others, without thinking about self-satisfaction.

At first, he gives extra horses to Luke, who now accepts them, but Olenin does not trust his motives. However, over time, although he won the respect of the local villagers, another Russian named Beletsky came along, who was still included in Moscow’s methods, and partially undermined Olenin’s values and persuaded him with his actions to try to win Maryanka’s love.

Olenin approached him several times, and Luke heard it from a Cossack, so he didn’t invite Olenin to the wedding. Olenin spends the night with Eroshka, but soon decides not to stop with the girl and rehearses her heart. Eventually, in a moment of love, she asks him to marry her, to which he is said to answer soon.

However, Luke was severely wounded when he went with a group of Cossacks to face a group of Chechens who were trying to attack the village, including the brother of a man he had previously killed. Although the Chechens were defeated after the Cossacks took the car to block their bullets, the murdered Chechen’s brother managed to shoot Luke in the stomach upon arrival.

When Luke seems to be dying and the people of the village take care of him, Olenin Maryanka comes to ask for her hand; he angrily refused. He realized that “his first impression of this woman’s inaccessibility was quite correct.”

He asked his company commander to leave and join the staff. He says goodbye to Eroshka, who is the only villager who sees him. Eroshka is emotional about Olenin, but after Olenin leaves and looks back, he sees that Eroshka has obviously forgotten about her and returned to normal life.

Disabled, Dmitry Andrei Olenin, disappointed by his privileges in Russian society, joined the army as a cadet, hoping to escape the shoals of his daily life. In his desire to find “perfection,” he hopes in vain that he will find peace among the “common” people of the Caucasus. In an effort to immerse himself in the local culture, he befriends the old man.

They drank wine, cursed and hunted pheasants and farmers in the Cossack tradition, and Olenin even began to dress Cossacks. Read more summary here: The Cossacks Summary by Wiki.

She forgets about herself and falls in love with young Maryanka, even her fiancée Lukashka.
