The Land of Mist Pdf Book Summary by BajrontBooks
The Land of Mist takes some of the characters who discover an island full of prehistoric creatures in Conan Doyle’s The Lost World and issues them to explore even the strangest world of ghosts and spirits.
In the later decades of his life, Conan Doyle was an ardent spiritualist and a great promoter of this cause. He likes to distance Sherlock Holmes too far from his supernatural interests, but in this book, Professor Challenger and his company stand for all sorts of strange surprises, and I’ve terribly become an enthusiastic orator.
The book started well when journalist Malone attended a spiritual service for a newspaper article. The event is described as straightforward in all its strangeness, and there is an interesting description of its attentive gathering, usually of the lower middle class:
Ambitious people are always curious, whether you agree with them or not, and there is no doubt that these people are extremely sincere. The hall was crowded, and when one looked down he saw a series of faces turned backwards, strangely the same type, dominated by women but men walking toward them.
This species is not famous or intellectual, but it is infallibly healthy, honest and kind. Small business owners – men, tradesmen and women, better craftsmen, lower middle class women dressed in home care, occasionally young – looking for emotion.
Some of the speakers seemed to have no threat; one brings news from Atlantis and the other announces the Second Coming, but the audience actually comes to hear the media and offers news from outside – often unspecified, but often satisfying the audience because they give a sense of contact with the loved one who has died. Malone received a possible message from another member of the Challenger team, but remained skeptical.
However, he was intrigued enough to investigate further and was taken to other events. These are not good public events, such as a spiritual service, but perfect sessions where ectoplasmic spirits are uniquely represented. He became less skeptical.
