Xerxes

Description of the Book
The name of Xerxes is associated in the minds of the people with the idea of the highest height of the majesty and greatness of man. This king was the ruler of the ancient Persian Empire when it was at the height of its prosperity and power. However, it may be that his greatness and his name do not lose anything from the way his story has come down to us through the historians of Greece.
The Greeks defeated Xerxes, and, in telling his story, they magnified the wealth, power, and resources of his empire, and magnified the greatness and fame of their own persecution by reducing it to bottom. Xerxes’ mother was Atossa, daughter of Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Empire. Cyrus was killed in Scythia, a wild and wild region north of the Black and Caspian seas. He was succeeded by his son Cambyses.

About the Author
Abbott graduated from Bowdoin College in 1820. At some point during his years there, he is said to have added a second “t” to his surname, to avoid being “Jacob Abbot the 3rd” (he was although one source says he didn’t actually start signing his name with two t’s until many years later).
Abbott studied at Andover Theological Seminary in 1821, 1822, and 1824. He taught at Portland Academy and was a lecturer at Amherst College the next year.
